How to change a TikTok slideshow cover (and design slide 1 for both jobs)
As of November 2026, TikTok's Creator Academy lists the image cover among the settings you can edit while preparing a photo post, and its API picks the cover by photo number. TikTok documents no steps for changing a cover after posting, so design slide 1 to work as the cover and as the first slide.

Can you change the cover of a TikTok slideshow?
Before you post, yes. As of November 2026, TikTok's Creator Academy (opens in a new tab) says that while you swipe through your photos in the editor you can edit the image cover, along with the description, hashtags, tagged people, location, link and privacy. That is the documented moment to set it.
After you post is a different matter. We found no TikTok page that says whether the cover of a published photo post can be changed, and none that lists menu steps for doing it.
| Question | What we found | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Can you edit the cover while preparing a post? | Yes, the image cover is on the list of editable settings | Creator Academy |
| How does the API choose a cover? | By photo_cover_index, a 0-based number that selects the cover photo (as of 27 October 2026) | TikTok for Developers (opens in a new tab) |
| Can you change it after publishing? | No TikTok page found, either way | none |
| Which photo is the default cover? | Not stated in the pages we read | none |
| How is the cover cropped in the profile grid? | No figure found | none |
How can you check whether a published photo post lets you change its cover?
TikTok documents the cover as a setting you edit while preparing a post. We found no TikTok page that says what a published photo post allows, and menus can differ between app versions, regions and accounts. So test it on your own account.
- Open one of your published photo posts.
- Open its edit or settings options and look for a cover option.
- If you find one, use it, then reopen the post and look at slide 1 as the cover.
- If you do not, treat the cover as something you set before posting.
Write down the app version and the date of your test. Treat menu steps for an after-posting cover change from any third-party source as unverified until you see them on your own screen.
What does the first photo do as the cover?
TikTok's API field takes a number, not a second picture. The cover is chosen from the photos you submit, counted from 0. Our reading is that the cover of a photo post is one of the slides themselves, although no TikTok sentence says so in words.
The pages we read do not say which photo is the default or how the cover is cropped in your profile, in search or in a feed. The safe assumption is that slide 1 is the cover, and that any other slide you pick instead must also make sense alone.
Instagram documents this more clearly. As of November 2026, Instagram's Help Center (opens in a new tab) says the feed shows the first photo or video of a carousel with a row of dots, and the profile grid shows the first item with a carousel icon. So slide 1 doubles as the cover there too, and the carousel grid crop guide covers how the grid trims it.
How do you design slide 1 for both jobs?
Slide 1 has two jobs that pull in different directions. As a cover it is seen alone, small and next to other posts. As the first slide it opens a swipe and has to be followed by slide 2.
| As a cover | As slide 1 | |
|---|---|---|
| Needs | Text readable at a small size, one idea | A reason to swipe, a promise that slide 2 keeps |
| Fails when | Text is tiny, near an edge or depends on the caption | The hook gives the answer away or does not match what follows |
Run this test before you export:
- Open slide 1 at the size you will upload.
- Shrink it to the width of a thumb on your phone screen.
- Read the hook. If you cannot, make the text larger or cut words.
- Move key words away from the edges. We found no pixel margins from TikTok for photo posts, so the safe zone guide treats every number as a rule of thumb.
- Ignore the caption. Does slide 1 still say what the post is about?
- Swipe to slide 2. Does it start delivering what slide 1 promised?
Here is a finished example. The hook promises three, and three follow.
- 1/5
3 things I stopped carrying in my commute bag
Cover and slide 1: one claim, large text, nothing near the edges
- 2/5
Thing 1: the second umbrella One that lives at the office is enough.
Slide 2 starts paying off the promise at once
- 3/5
Thing 2: the full-size notebook A phone note covers most days.
- 4/5
Thing 3: the spare charger I leave one on my desk instead.
- 5/5
What would you drop first?
One closing question
More first-slide patterns are in slideshow hooks, and the hook generator drafts options to test against the thumbnail check.
What if a tool or scheduler sets the cover?
A tool that posts through TikTok's API can pass the cover index itself. We have not checked which tools do. After a scheduled post goes live, open it and confirm that the cover is the slide you intended.
Fyslide exports your slides and you upload them yourself, so the cover is something you set in TikTok at upload. In Fyslide you edit slide 1 in the editor like any other slide.
Is the cover the same as the title?
No. In TikTok's API they are separate fields: a title limited to 90 UTF-16 runes and a cover index (as of 27 October 2026). The posting checklist lists both as upload steps.
Can the cover be a different image from all the slides?
We found no TikTok page that describes a separate cover image for photo posts. The API's cover index points into the photos you submit.
