How many photos can a TikTok slideshow have? (and how many to use)
As of November 2026, TikTok's Creator Academy says a photo post can hold up to 35 images, and we found no minimum published by TikTok. The limit is a ceiling. Most text-led formats need between 4 and 10 slides, in our view, and the right count follows from how many points you have.

What is TikTok's official photo limit?
Up to 35. TikTok's Creator Academy (opens in a new tab) says a photo post can hold up to 35 images, and the photo field of the Content Posting API (opens in a new tab) takes up to 35 photo URLs. The TikTok Help Center (opens in a new tab) adds that one editing session holds up to 35 items, and that those items can be photos and videos.
Two numbers from the same pages are easy to confuse with the photo limit. The Help Center mentions overlays of up to 8 items, and a post carries one sound.
Why do other numbers circulate?
| Figure you may see | Where it shows up | Status as of November 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 35 | Creator Academy, Help Center, API reference | Official |
| 1 to 10, 2 to 35 or 4 to 35 | Third-party scheduler and spec pages | Conflicts with the official "up to 35"; ignore it |
| A minimum of 2, 3 or 4 | Third-party how-to pages | We found no minimum stated by TikTok, and the sources disagree with each other |
We found no source for an earlier, lower cap either, so do not repeat one. TikTok published no change history for the cap that we could find. Its 2022 Photo Mode announcement (opens in a new tab) named no cap at all, and the earliest direct mention of photo carousels we located is a CoSchedule product note (opens in a new tab) from December 2023. Without a changelog, the guides alone cannot tell you which number is current.
The absence of an official minimum is not proof that none exists. If your plan depends on posting two or three photos, try it once in your own app.
How many slides should you actually use?
The limit is a ceiling, not a target. We found no independent dataset that identifies a best slide count, so the table below is craft advice. It counts what each format has to say, then adds the slides that frame it.
| Format | Slides to plan | How the count is built |
|---|---|---|
| One tip with proof | 4 to 6 | Hook, the tip, one or two proof slides, closing ask |
| Numbered list | Items plus 2 | One hook, one slide per item, one closing ask. See the listicle format |
| Would you rather | Dilemmas plus 2 | Four to six dilemmas keep each one fresh |
| Myth and fact | Two per pair, plus 2 | Myth slide, fact slide, then frame |
| Story | 5 to 7 | One beat per slide: setup, turn, payoff, plus hook and ask |
| Tutorial | Steps plus 2 | One step per slide |
| Photo dump, little text | As many good pictures as you have, up to 35 | No argument to carry, so no minimum structure |
Fyslide's default is six slides per post, which sits in the middle of the first rows. That is a default, not a recommendation backed by data.
What does the arithmetic look like?
Example (fictional topics): a pour-over coffee tutorial has four steps, so four plus two makes six slides. A myth-and-fact post that corrects three beliefs needs two slides per pair, six in all, plus the frame, so eight. A would-you-rather post with five dilemmas needs seven. If the result looks long, ask whether each unit earns its own slide before you cut a frame slide. The hook and the ask are cheap. A weak middle slide is not.
Should you ever go above ten?
Rarely, and only when every slide pays off by itself: an event recap, an itinerary, a gallery. Each extra slide asks the viewer for another swipe.
What TikTok says about the effect of length is thin. Its Help Center (opens in a new tab) lists watching to the end or skipping among the interactions that shape the For You feed, but the page says nothing about how photo posts are weighted. So whether swipe-through depth counts for a slideshow is unconfirmed.
Your own numbers beat advice here. Post two slideshows with the same hook and different lengths, then compare. If you record views and saves by hand, Fyslide's analytics guide explains how to link a post and type its numbers in. Automatic analytics there is "Coming soon".
How do you settle your number in four steps?
- Write down the points the slideshow must make, one line each.
- Add one slide for the hook and one for the closing ask.
- Delete any slide that repeats another or that no one would miss.
- If the result is over about ten, split it into two posts. A Part 2 gives you a reason for a second post and keeps each one tight.
Then check the text load. Words per slide explains how much each slide can carry before the count stops mattering.
Do Instagram carousels have the same limit?
No. As of November 2026, Instagram's Help Center (opens in a new tab) says a carousel can hold up to 20 photos and videos, which affects you if you plan to reuse the same slides there. The Instagram carousel guide covers it.
Can you post more than 35 photos on TikTok?
Not in one photo post. Split the material into two posts, for example Part 1 and Part 2.
Do videos count toward the 35?
TikTok's Help Center says an editing session holds up to 35 items, and those items can be photos and videos. It does not say how a published post shows a mix.
Is there a minimum number of photos?
TikTok's Creator Academy and Help Center do not state one. Third-party guides give 2, 3 or 4, and they contradict each other. Test in your own app.
