Instagram carousel caption: structure, templates and the hashtag limit

As of November 2026, Instagram's Help Center says a post can have up to five hashtags, and the only caption limit we found is 2,200 characters in Meta's Graph API reference. Open with the context the slides lack, add one ask, and put hashtags last. Keep the argument on the slides.

The slides carry the argument. The caption does the jobs the slides cannot: it gives context, adds detail that did not fit, asks for one thing and holds the hashtags. Instagram's Help Center (opens in a new tab) says likes and comments apply to the whole post, not to a single slide. The caption belongs to the whole post in the same way, so it is the text that stays attached whichever slide the viewer is on.

A four-part structure is a reasonable default. It is practice, not a rule:

  1. Line one: context. What the viewer gets, in plain words, without repeating the cover word for word.
  2. Body: what the slides left out. The caveat, the source, the exception, a short recap.
  3. The ask. One verb: save, send, answer or follow.
  4. Hashtags last. Few, specific, and inside the limit.

The words on the cover belong to a different job, covered in slideshow hooks. The whole-post picture, including size and structure, is in the Instagram carousel guide.

What are the caption and hashtag limits?

As of November 2026, these are the numbers and how sure we are of each.

ItemLimitSource and caveat
HashtagsUp to five per postHelp Center (opens in a new tab); with more than five on a single photo or video the comment will not post. Page read in German and translated
Caption length2,200 charactersStated only in Meta's Graph API reference (opens in a new tab). We found no consumer Help Center page that states it, so treat it as a planning ceiling
Alt textNo limit foundHelp Center (opens in a new tab): generated automatically, editable before and after posting
Preview lengthNo number foundWe found no statement of how much of a long caption shows before the feed shortens it

The Graph API reference lists the 2,200 figure on the same line as 30 hashtags, which conflicts with the Help Center. The developer docs appear to lag, which is the reason to call the caption limit medium confidence. If you also post on TikTok, its caption limit is different: see TikTok slideshow captions.

Up to five. The Help Center says so, and the change is recent. On 18 December 2025 Social Media Today (opens in a new tab), quoting Instagram, reported that Instagram would gradually update the hashtag limit for a reel or post to five. Business Today (opens in a new tab) reported the same a day later.

The rollout is gradual, so some accounts may still see a higher limit. Guides that say 30 are out of date. We found no data on how many tags work best, so choose the few that describe the subject and the format, and stop at five. The free caption length checker counts characters and hashtags against both limits as you type.

Which caption template fits your goal?

Pick by what the viewer should do after the last slide. Replace everything in braces. The slides these captions sit under follow one of the ten carousel structures.

What does a filled caption look like?

Two examples with invented topics, with the length printed so you can see how little of the limit a good caption uses. In our count, hashtags and line breaks are included.

The first caption uses 327 characters, about one seventh of the 2,200 the Graph API reference states. Most carousel captions do not need more. A longer caption is a deliberate choice, for a recap or a source list, not a space to fill.

What belongs on the slides and what belongs in the caption?

Put anything the viewer needs in order to understand the carousel on the slides, because the caption may be skimmed or skipped. Put the rest in the caption.

ElementOn the slidesIn the caption
The promiseYes, on the coverRephrased in line one, not repeated
The points or stepsYes, one per slideOptional recap in plain lines

Long explanationsNo, they crowd the slideYes

There is one accessibility reason to repeat key text. Text baked into a slide image is normally not read by screen readers unless the alt text repeats it (a general accessibility point). Instagram generates alt text automatically (opens in a new tab) and lets you replace it before posting, under Next and then Accessibility, or on a published post under Options, Edit and Accessibility. The page does not say whether alt text can be set per slide, so check in your app. A recap in the caption helps readers who cannot see the slide text.

How do you check a caption before posting?

  • Line one gives context and does not copy the cover.
  • The caption has one ask, and it matches the final slide.
  • Five hashtags or fewer, all about the subject.
  • The length is well under 2,200 characters, counted with the checker.
  • You looked at the caption on your phone to see how much shows at first glance.
  • Alt text reviewed, with the slide text added where it matters.

If you build carousels in Fyslide, the export gives you the slides, the caption and a zip in one folder. You then paste the caption into Instagram and upload the slides yourself, since posting Instagram carousels from the app is marked "Coming soon, included in your lifetime access as an update". The export guide lists what the folder contains.

How many hashtags can I use on an Instagram carousel?

As of November 2026, Instagram's Help Center (opens in a new tab) says up to five. Reports from 18 and 19 December 2025 described a gradual rollout, so some accounts may still see a higher limit.

Is the Instagram caption limit 2,200 characters?

As of November 2026, that figure is in Meta's Graph API reference (opens in a new tab). We found no consumer Help Center page that states it, and the same reference still lists 30 hashtags, so treat 2,200 as a planning ceiling.

Is the hashtag limit for the caption or for comments?

The Help Center line we read says a post can have up to five hashtags, and that with more than five on a single photo or video the comment will not post. It does not separate caption from comments, so stay at five or fewer in total.

Should the caption repeat the text on the slides?

Not word for word. A short recap helps readers who cannot see the slide text, and the caption can carry what did not fit.
