How many slides can an Instagram carousel have? (and how many to use)
As of November 2026, Instagram's Help Center says a carousel holds up to 20 photos and videos. That is a ceiling, not a target. In our view the right count is your points plus a cover and a closing slide, which lands between 5 and 12 for most content types.

What is the slide limit on an Instagram carousel?
As of November 2026, Instagram's Help Center (opens in a new tab) says a carousel post can hold up to 20 photos and videos. Meta's Graph API reference (opens in a new tab) agrees: it allows up to 20 container IDs for a carousel. Photos and videos share the same 20 places, so a carousel with 12 photos and 8 clips is full.
The Help Center page was read in German and translated. The page we read gives one total for the post and no separate cap for videos.
| Number | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 20 | Items per carousel, photos and videos together | Current. Help Center and Graph API |
| 10 | The limit in Instagram's 2017 announcement (opens in a new tab) | Outdated |
| 20 (in a scheduler) | Buffer's media table (opens in a new tab) allows up to 20 images per Instagram post, as of 5 November 2026 | A tool limit that happens to match |
| 1 item only | Canva's Instagram scheduling (opens in a new tab) supports a single image or video, not carousels, as of 5 November 2026 | A tool limit; a machine-translated help page |
The last two rows show why a "cannot add another slide" problem is sometimes the tool and not Instagram. Check the tool's own cap before blaming the platform.
Why do people still say 10?
Because 10 was true for years. Instagram announced the 10-item limit in 2017. Reports dated 9 August 2024 from PetaPixel (opens in a new tab) and Metricool (opens in a new tab) said Instagram raised it to 20.
We could not retrieve Instagram's own 2024 announcement, so the date of the change rests on those two secondary reports. The 20-item cap itself is on the Help Center page, which is why it is the number to use. If a tool or template still stops at 10, it may predate the change.
How many slides should you use?
The limit is a ceiling. We found no independent dataset that identifies a best slide count for Instagram, and Instagram's May 2023 ranking explainer (opens in a new tab) names no format ranking. So the number has to come from your material.
Our rule: slides = points + frame slides. A point is one idea the viewer takes away. The frame is a cover that makes the promise and a closing slide that asks for one thing. The ranges below apply that rule. They are our planning figures, not Instagram guidance.
| Content type | Points to carry | Frame slides | Slides to plan | Unit of one slide |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Step-by-step how-to | 3 to 7 steps | 2 | 5 to 9 | One step |
| Checklist or cheat sheet | 5 to 8 items | 2 | 7 to 10 | One item |
| Myth and fact | 3 to 5 pairs | 2 | 5 to 7 | One pair, myth above fact |
| Case study from your own work | 4 beats: situation, action, result, lesson | 2 | 6 | One beat |
| Comparison of two options | 3 to 5 criteria | 2 | 5 to 7 | One criterion |
| Story or timeline | 4 to 6 moments | 2 | 6 to 8 | One moment |
| Weekly plan, day by day | 5 to 7 days | 2 | 7 to 9 | One day |
| Glossary of terms | 6 to 10 terms | 2 | 8 to 12 | One term |
| Photo set from a trip or event | As many strong photos as you have | 0 to 1 | 5 to 20 | One photo |
The photo set is the only row that can approach 20 honestly, because it carries no argument. Every photo has to earn its swipe by itself. For the job each slide does, see slideshow structure, which maps a hook, setup, points, payoff and call to action onto 5, 7 and 10 slides. That page also counts a separate setup slide and payoff slide, so for the same slide count its layouts hold fewer points than this rule; in a list or how-to the last point can double as the payoff.
Example (fictional topic): a carousel on five ways to cut cable clutter has five points. Five plus a cover and a closing slide makes seven. If a recap slide tempts you, ask whether it adds a point or repeats one. If it repeats, leave it out and stay at seven.
How long does a carousel take to read?
More slides means more reading, and the load adds up faster than the count suggests. Using the word budgets from the words per slide page, we plan about 2.5 seconds for a cover, 3.5 seconds for each content slide and 3 seconds for the closing slide. We found no Instagram figure for viewing times and people read at different speeds, so treat these as planning figures.
| Slides | Content slides | Planned reading time (our arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 5 | 2.5 + 5 x 3.5 + 3 = 23 seconds |
| 12 | 10 | 2.5 + 10 x 3.5 + 3 = 40.5 seconds |
| 20 | 18 | 2.5 + 18 x 3.5 + 3 = 68.5 seconds |
A 20-slide text carousel asks for more than a minute of attention. A photo set needs far less per slide, which is why it can be long.
How do you settle your number in five steps?
- List the points the carousel must make, one line each.
- Add a cover and a closing slide.
- Add the points and the frame. That is your count.
- Compare it with the planner table. If you are above the range for your type, ask which points repeat each other.
- If you are still over about 12 with a text carousel, consider two carousels. A "Part 2" gives you a reason to post again.
The free slideshow planner prints a slide-by-slide outline with a word budget when you pick a format, a number of points and Instagram. It always adds a setup slide, so it plans points plus four slides rather than points plus two; delete the setup slide if your carousel does not need one. The slide text checker warns when a text pasted slide by slide goes above 20 slides for Instagram.
What about the first slide when the count is high?
The first slide matters more as the count grows. Instagram's Help Center says likes and comments apply to the whole post, not to a single slide, and the profile grid shows only the first item (the Instagram carousel guide covers how the feed and grid show a carousel). A long carousel therefore has one slide that must work alone, and that slide is the same whether the post has 5 slides or 20.
Because the profile grid shows only the first item, check how it is trimmed. That is the topic of the profile grid crop page.
Where does Fyslide fit?
If you build text carousels regularly, a desktop tool can draft the slide texts from a topic. Fyslide works that way: you pick a design, give a topic, and the AI you connect writes the slide texts. Its default is six slides per post, which is a default and not a recommendation. Fyslide exports PNG or JPG slides, and you upload them to Instagram yourself, because posting Instagram carousels from the app is marked "Coming soon, included in your lifetime access as an update". The topic to carousel guide shows the steps.
What is the maximum number of slides on an Instagram carousel?
As of November 2026, Instagram's Help Center (opens in a new tab) says up to 20 photos and videos in one carousel. The Graph API reference (opens in a new tab) allows 20 as well.
Is there a minimum number of slides?
We found no minimum on the Help Center pages we read. A carousel is a post with several items, so plan at least a cover and one more (our suggestion).
Did Instagram really raise the limit from 10 to 20?
PetaPixel and Metricool reported it on 9 August 2024. We could not retrieve Instagram's own announcement, so the date comes from those reports, while the 20-item cap is on the Help Center.
Do more slides get more reach?
We found no Instagram statement and no independent dataset that ties slide count to reach. Instagram's ranking explainer names no format or length preference. Test your own counts and compare.
How many slides is too many?
There is no documented point. In our view a text carousel above about 12 slides is worth splitting, unless every slide pays off on its own.
