TikTok slideshow vs carousel vs Photo Mode: what each term means
For a post made of still images that people swipe through, slideshow, photo carousel and Photo Mode are three names for what TikTok's own pages call a photo post. Instagram's official name for its version is a carousel. The only real fork is a video made from photos, which is a video.

Are a TikTok slideshow, a carousel and Photo Mode the same thing?
For a post made of several still images, yes. The names come from different speakers, not from different formats. The one case where the word "slideshow" means something else is a video you assemble from photos, which is covered in the table.
| Term | Who uses it | What it refers to |
|---|---|---|
| Photo post | TikTok's Creator Academy (opens in a new tab) and the Content Posting API reference (opens in a new tab) | A post of up to 35 images. In the API the media type is PHOTO. |
| Photo Mode | TikTok's Newsroom (opens in a new tab), which announced it on 6 October 2022 | The feature name at launch. Creators still say it. |
| Photo carousel | Scheduling tools such as CoSchedule (opens in a new tab), and many creators | The same post under Instagram's name for it |
| Slideshow | Creators, tool vendors, search queries | Usually the same post. Sometimes a video built from photos with timed transitions. |
| Video slideshow | Video editors and templates | A video file. It is posted as a video, not as a photo post, which is how CapCut's own guide (opens in a new tab) also separates them. |
Of the TikTok pages checked for this article, the official ones say "photo post" or "Photo Mode". "Slideshow" and "carousel" are everyday and tool vocabulary.
What does Instagram mean by a carousel?
Instagram's Help Center describes a carousel post as one post that holds up to 20 photos and videos. TikTok creators and scheduling tools reuse the word for photo posts. The two products differ in details that a viewer notices, as the next section shows.
What changes for the viewer on each platform?
| As of November 2026 | TikTok photo post | Instagram carousel |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum items | 35 images | 20 photos and videos, per Instagram's Help Center (opens in a new tab) |
| Video inside it | The Help Center says an editing session can hold photos and videos; how a finished post shows them is not stated | Allowed, and videos in a carousel are not Reels |
| What appears first | A cover you can choose | The first photo or video, with a row of dots in the feed |
| Sound | One sound per post | Music on a multi-photo post on mobile, not on carousels that contain video, per Instagram's music page (opens in a new tab) |
| Caption limit | 4,000 characters | 2,200 characters, as stated in Meta's Graph API reference (opens in a new tab) |
Two more Instagram details matter to a viewer. The profile grid shows only the first item, marked with a carousel icon. And likes and comments apply to the whole post, not to a single slide.
Treat the Instagram caption figure with some caution. It comes from developer documentation, and no consumer Help Center page stating it was found. On pacing, TikTok's pages are not fully consistent: the Creator Academy says viewers swipe at their own pace, while the 2022 Newsroom post said photo posts also display one after another. Do not plan around a fixed auto-advance time.
Which word should you use?
- Talking to TikTok support or reading its documentation: photo post.
- Writing for your audience or a caption: slideshow reads naturally and is what people type into search boxes.
- Instagram: carousel, always.
- Briefing a freelancer or an AI tool: be literal. "A photo post of 6 images, same ratio, text baked into each image, no video." That removes the guesswork. If you use Fyslide, the brief is simply the topic and a design, as the topic to slideshow guide shows.
For the step-by-step version of making one, see how to make a TikTok slideshow. For Instagram, the carousel guide has the rules.
Does the name change how a post performs?
No. The name is a label, not a format switch. What does vary is photo post versus video, and the evidence there conflicts. Buffer's 2026 report found a median TikTok engagement rate of 3.39% for video and 1.92% for images, per its engagement report (opens in a new tab). Fanpage Karma's analysis (opens in a new tab) of almost 700,000 TikTok and Instagram posts reported the opposite direction for TikTok carousels. Both are vendor datasets with different periods and definitions, so neither settles it. Our summary of what tends to work keeps the metrics apart.
