What is TikTok Photo Mode? Definition, limits and how it differs from a video slideshow

TikTok Photo Mode is the feature TikTok announced on 6 October 2022 for posting still images as one swipeable post. As of November 2026, TikTok's Creator Academy says a photo post holds up to 35 images and a caption of up to 4,000 characters. A slideshow made as a video in an editor is a different thing.

What is TikTok Photo Mode?

TikTok Photo Mode is TikTok's way of posting still images instead of a video. You pick photos, add text, stickers, a sound and a caption, and viewers swipe through the images as one post. TikTok's Newsroom announced Photo Mode on 6 October 2022 (opens in a new tab), and that announcement states no cap on the number of photos.

TikTok's Creator Academy calls it a "photo post". The other names for the same thing, such as slideshow and photo carousel, are sorted out in slideshow, carousel and photo mode.

What are the official limits?

As of November 2026, these are the numbers on TikTok's own pages.

The Creator Academy points to TikTok's Commercial Music Library for sounds and advises picking a commercially available or licensed one. That wording is written for brands and publishers. The Help Center page was read in German and translated.

Is there a minimum number of photos?

As of November 2026, neither the Creator Academy nor the Help Center states a minimum, while third-party sources list 2, 3 or 4. A missing number on two pages is not proof that no minimum exists, so test in the live app before you plan around one.

What can you do inside a photo post?

The Creator Academy describes the flow in the app: tap Add Post (+), then Photo, then Upload, select your photos and tap Next. While you swipe through the photos in the editor you can add a filter, a sound, text or stickers, or crop. You can also edit the image cover, description, hashtags, tagged people, location, link and privacy.

The same article advises cropping all photos to the same ratio for a cleaner look and gives no pixel size. Check your caption against the limits before you paste it in.

How is Photo Mode different from a slideshow video?

A photo post is a set of separate images that viewers swipe through. A slideshow video is one video file made from photos, usually built in a video editor. CapCut's own guide (opens in a new tab) separates the two the same way: swipeable photo posts are made in the TikTok app, and slideshows made in an editor are videos.

Pacing is not settled. The Creator Academy says viewers swipe through photo posts at their own pace, while the 2022 Newsroom post said Photo Mode posts also display one after another. The two wordings differ, so do not plan around a fixed timing.

Is TikTok Photo Mode free?

As of November 2026, yes: Photo Mode is free as part of the TikTok mobile app, according to the Creator Academy photo-posting article (opens in a new tab).

How many photos can a Photo Mode post hold?

Up to 35 as of November 2026. Third-party pages that give other limits conflict with TikTok's own pages; the full answer lists the sources.

Do photo posts get more engagement than videos?

The evidence conflicts. Two vendor datasets point in opposite directions on TikTok, and this page compares them.
