How to add music to a TikTok slideshow (one sound per post)
As of November 2026, TikTok's Creator Academy says photo posts can have music and lists sound among the things you add in the editor while you swipe through your photos. The Help Center allows one sound per post. TikTok documents no further steps, so this guide covers picking a sound for text-heavy slides and when to skip it.

Where does music fit when you post a TikTok slideshow?
As of November 2026, TikTok's Creator Academy (opens in a new tab) says photo posts can have music. It lists sound next to filters, text, stickers and cropping as things you can add while you swipe through your photos in the editor. The documented route to that editor is short:
- Tap Add Post (+), then Photo, then Upload.
- Select your photos and tap Next.
- Swipe through the photos in the editor and add the sound there.
- Finish the post details and publish.
The TikTok pages we read stop at that point. We found none that describes the sound screen itself, so we cannot tell you where the search box sits, how to trim a track or how loud it plays against your slides. Your screen is the authority here: if a label differs from the list above, follow the label.
What are TikTok's rules for the sound?
The TikTok Help Center (opens in a new tab) says one editing session holds up to 35 items, with overlays of up to 8 items and one sound per post. A slideshow therefore carries one sound. (We read that page in German, translated.)
The Creator Academy also points to the Commercial Music Library and advises choosing a commercially available or licensed sound. That wording is written for brands and publishers. We found nothing that spells out what applies to a personal account, so read any notice the app shows before you choose a track.
| Question | What we found, as of November 2026 | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Can a photo post have music? | Yes | Creator Academy |
| How many sounds? | One per post | Help Center |
| Which library? | The Creator Academy points to the Commercial Music Library and says to pick a commercially available or licensed sound | Creator Academy |
| Can you time slides to the beat? | No timing is documented, and the sources differ on pacing (see below) | Creator Academy, 2022 Newsroom |
| Trimming, volume, replacing a sound after posting | We found no TikTok page for photo posts | none |
On pacing, the Creator Academy says viewers swipe through photo posts at their own pace. TikTok's 2022 Newsroom announcement (opens in a new tab) said Photo Mode posts also display one slide after another automatically. The two wordings differ, so do not build a slideshow that only works if the track hits a beat on a certain slide.
How do you pick a sound for a text-heavy slideshow?
A text-heavy slideshow asks the viewer to read, and the sound should support that. What follows is our editorial judgment, not a measured result: no source we found tests which sounds suit photo posts.
| Slideshow type | Sound that tends to fit | Our reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Tips or how-to list | A steady instrumental at an even level | Nothing in the track asks for attention while the viewer reads each tip |
| Story or confession | A slow track that matches the mood | The sound sets the tone for the whole swipe |
| Quiz or pick-one format | Something light with a clear rhythm | A rhythm gives short, quick slides some energy |
| Serious topic such as money or health | A quiet instrumental, or no sound | A playful track can undercut the message |
Audition a track before you commit to it:
- Play it while you swipe through the slides at the speed you expect viewers to read. The words per slide page gives a budget.
- Read your densest slide while the track plays. If you lose your place, the track is too busy for this post.
- Listen to the whole track once. A loud section late in the song can land on a quiet closing slide.
- Confirm you may use it on your account type, using the rules above.
When should you post without music?
- You cannot confirm the sound is allowed for your account. Skipping is safer than guessing.
- The slides are the content. A checklist or a table that people read slowly loses nothing without a track.
- You are choosing a track because it is popular. The Help Center lists sounds (opens in a new tab) among the content information TikTok uses for recommendations, but it says nothing about how much a sound counts for photo posts. A popular track is not a documented shortcut.
- Your tool cannot add one. The next section explains why that happens.
What if a scheduling tool posts the slideshow?
As of 5 November 2026, Buffer's help center (opens in a new tab) says the TikTok music library is not available through the API, so you cannot pick a library sound when Buffer sends the post. TikTok's own photo-post reference (opens in a new tab) lists, as of 27 October 2026, two post modes: DIRECT_POST, and MEDIA_UPLOAD, where the user finishes the post in the TikTok editor and gets an inbox notification.
If you want to choose the track yourself, the MEDIA_UPLOAD route ends in the TikTok editor, which by the Creator Academy list is where a sound can be added. Which scheduler supports which mode is covered in schedulers for TikTok photo carousels.
Does the same advice hold for an Instagram carousel?
Partly. As of November 2026, Instagram's Help Center (opens in a new tab) says music can be added to a post with multiple photos on mobile but not on a computer, that you can trim the song segment, and that music cannot be added to carousels with videos. That is a different rule set from TikTok's, so check the sound again when you reuse slides. The Instagram carousel music guide goes through it.
Fyslide exports PNG or JPG slides, the caption and a zip, and you upload them yourself, so choosing the sound is a step you take in TikTok at upload. The export guide shows what the folder contains.
Can I use two songs in one TikTok slideshow?
TikTok's Help Center says one sound per post, so a photo post carries a single track.
Does a TikTok slideshow need music?
The Creator Academy says photo posts can have music, not that they must. Posting without one is a valid choice.
Can I change the sound after the slideshow is published?
We found no TikTok page that covers this for photo posts. Open your own published post and see what your app offers; the posting checklist suggests choosing the sound before you publish.
