Add music to an Instagram carousel: when it works and when it does not

As of November 2026, Instagram's Help Center says music can be added to a post with multiple photos on mobile, not on computers, and that you can trim the song segment. It says music cannot be added to carousels that contain videos. If the option is missing, check for a video slide first.

Yes, with conditions. As of November 2026, Instagram's Help Center (opens in a new tab) says music can be added to a post with multiple photos on mobile, not on computers, and that you can trim the song segment. The same page says music cannot be added to carousels with videos.

That is the whole documented rule: photos only, on a phone, with a trimmable segment. Everything else on this page is either our reading of that rule or something we could not confirm, and we say which.

Which carousels qualify?

The practical consequence for text carousels is good. A text slide exported as an image is a photo, so a carousel made of image slides can take music. A slide that is a video clip, even a three-second one, rules the whole post out.

Start with the two documented causes, then work through the checks.

Documented causes

  1. A slide is a video. The Help Center says music cannot be added to carousels with videos. Replace the clip with a still image of its best frame, or move the clip to its own post.
  2. You are on a computer. The option is on mobile only. Switch to the phone app.

Worth checking (no source we read confirms these as causes)

  1. Only one photo is selected so far. Select the second photo before you look for the option, because the help page covers posts with multiple photos.
  2. An old app version. Update the app and look again.
  3. Your account or region. We found no statement that either one changes the option, so treat it as a last check and not a diagnosis.

A fast test splits the causes. Start a new post with three plain photos and open the music option. If it appears, one of your original slides is the problem, and the usual suspect is a video.

How do you choose music for text-heavy slides?

Instagram gives no guidance on this, so what follows is our opinion, in order of how much it matters.

  • Choose for reading, not only for mood. In our view, a track with prominent lyrics competes with the words on the slide. A quiet or instrumental stretch leaves room to read.
  • Trim to the part that suits the carousel. Trimming the segment is documented. A seven-slide text carousel takes about 23 seconds to read at the planning figures on the how many slides page. We found no description of what the song does if it is shorter than the time someone spends on the post, so watch your own post and see.
  • Make every slide work with sound off. Some people will never turn sound on. No slide should depend on a beat or a lyric to make sense.
  • Do not cue the music in the text. People swipe when they choose, so a line like "wait for the drop" will not line up with anything.
  • Check what the picker offers. The pages we read do not say which songs are available to which kinds of accounts. Pick from what your account shows.

For slide length, the budget in words per slide applies the same way with or without a song.

How do you test it before you publish?

  1. Export every slide as an image, not a video.
  2. On your phone, start a new post and select the images in the order you want.
  3. Open the music option, pick a track and trim the segment.
  4. Preview once with sound on and once with sound off. Every slide must still read.
  5. Swipe slowly, then quickly. Note any slide where the lyrics fight the text.

If you build the slides in Fyslide, the export is PNG or JPG files, so the carousel is photo-only by construction. You add the music in the Instagram app when you upload, because Fyslide does not post to Instagram and posting is marked "Coming soon, included in your lifetime access as an update". The export guide shows what the folder holds.

What could we not confirm?

  • Music on carousels with video. The Help Center says no. A few blogs say it later became possible. We treat them as low confidence and recommend you open the music option on a video carousel yourself.
  • Changing the song after publishing. A single vendor blog, Soundstripe (opens in a new tab), says Instagram has offered a "Replace Audio" option in Edit since July 2026. We saw that only in a search excerpt and could not verify it. Check the Edit menu on your own post before you plan around it.
  • Where a carousel with music appears. The Help Center (opens in a new tab) says videos inside a carousel are not Reels and do not appear in the Reels tab. We found no statement that adding music to a photo carousel changes where it appears.
  • Moving a TikTok song across. TikTok's Creator Academy (opens in a new tab) says photo posts take one sound per post. We found no source on whether the same song is in Instagram's picker, so choose again on Instagram, as the repurposing page suggests. The TikTok side of the question is on the page about music for TikTok slideshows.
Can I add music to an Instagram carousel from my computer?

Not according to Instagram's Help Center (opens in a new tab), which says music can be added to a post with multiple photos on mobile, not on computers.

Why can't I add music to my carousel?

The documented cause is a video among the slides, because the Help Center says music cannot be added to carousels with videos. The other documented cause is using a computer. Beyond those, update the app and test with three plain photos.

Can I trim the song on a carousel?

Yes. The Help Center says you can trim the song segment.

Do some blogs say music works on video carousels?

Yes, but they conflict with Instagram's page. We treat them as low confidence.
